Sony
Sony Playstation took a big hit to its brand in 2011 when they disclosed in May 2011 that there was a security breach affecting nearly 100 million people and their personal data. After the credit card numbers and expiration dates, bank account numbers and a multitude of other personal information was exposed Sony it was estimated that the largest personal data heist in history could set Sony back$50 million dollars.

2011 and was a big year for Coca-Cola. Not only did it win Marketer of the Year from Adage but it celebrated the brand's 125th anniversary. To celebrate the iconic brand lit up the Atlanta skyline with the largest building illumination ever by lighting up the company's headquarters tower every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night in May. Now that would be a hard birthday candle to blow out, wouldn’t it?

The Royal Wedding
Some might argue this is not actually a brand, but when $70 million+ is spent on an event that garnered as much attention (and themed paraphernalia) as The Royal Wedding did I think it can be classified as a brand on its own. When Prince William proposed in November 2010 until the day they got married on April 29, 2011 it was non-stop royal wedding coverage. The Royal Wedding not only helped increase The Royal Family's engagement and presence with their own brand, but with the nation's brand as well by increasing exposure for the UK tourism, hospitality, and leisure brands.

When the NFL lockout began in 2011 no one was really sure how it would end. Would the season be shortened? Would we just lose preseason games? Or worse, would there be a season at all? No one wanted to imagine a fall with no football, and many feared what it could do to the NFL brand as a whole. But when all is said and done I believe the lockout may have been one of the best things to happen to the NFL brand, ever. When fans were faced with the possibility of no football and all of a sudden it got it back they embraced all that the NFL has to offer. And I think we all realized our ties to the brand go much deeper than one may have thought.

Oprah
On May 25th one of TV's greatest icons signed off one last time, ending the 25 year reign of the talk show Queen, Oprah. Check out what fellow blogger Beth Anne had to say about the brand that made us laugh, cry, and even scream over the years:
In 25 years, it is not just the show that evolved but also her brand. The Oprah show initially was a little risqué and reminiscent of what became the Ricki Lake show. Slowly over the years, it evolved into a self-help, mentally stimulating, celebratory show. The Oprah brand launched the careers of personalities like Dr. Phil, Nate Berkus, Bob Greene and Dr. Oz. Her endorsement is the golden touch. Marketers strove for just one mention of their brand on the air to have sales explode.

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese
In 2011 Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, the delicious blue box brand that has been a staple in the lives of American children since 1937 sought to break their traditional advertising mold and go after a more adult audience. With the creative assistance of ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Kraft impelemented three highly innovative social media campaigns: Mac & Jinx, Mac & Cheese TV, and Smile Tagging. When the campaigns were done running the brand netted 400% increase in followers and became a trending topic, with at one point 300 mentions per minute of "Mac & Cheese."

Chrysler
Chrysler has seen some hard times throughout the last few years. They've had to file for bankruptcy, close a number of factories, hand control over to a new parent company, Fiat, and cut thousands of jobs. But in early 2011 these weren’t the reason the American brand was making headlines. During 2011's Superbowl between the Pittsburg Steelers and Green Bay Packers Chrysler debuted their new Chrysler 200 model with an ad featuring Detroit native, and rapper Eminem. The $9 million dollar spot not only featured the Chrysler brand but the city of Detroit, both working their way back from hard times. The initial reaction from consumers was a positive one, but on the other hand the more political folk felt the ad was an irresponsible use of the bailout funds Chrysler has received, and that the company was using the ad more to gain political support than to sell cars. Either way Chrysler (and Detroit) made many headlines with this one.

To celebrate Starbuck's 40th anniversary the coffee giant announced a major logo redesign that incited a lot of uproar and debate over the change. The Starbucks name was entirely removed and their signature siren is now the logo's sole feature. The reasoning behind the change was by allowing the siren to come out of the circle the company is now thinking beyond coffee and farther into the future of their brand and its offerings. When Apple debuted the original iphone in June 2007 AT&T was the sole carrier of the new device, so they were able to attach themselves to the buzz surrounding the new device, and leaving Verizon in the dust. But that was 2007, and this is 2001, and after years of speculation to when the iphone would finally arrive at Verizon the waiting came to an end. On January 11, 2011 it was made official. The exclusive partnership between AT&T and Apple was coming to an end, and that Verizon would now be an official iphone carrier. (cue: technological hysteria) The highly anticipated announcement put Verizon into the forefront of millions of American's conversations; Verizon customers were all abuzz about joining the iphone carrying crowd, and AT&T customers were suddenly faced with the possibility of jumping ship to join a more reliable network without losing their precious iphone.
What's a tagline? Or a slogan? What about a mission statement?
Tagline, slogans, and mission statements. All three represent a company's image and position to some degree but all three also differ from one another in how they represent a company. But what are the differences?
Tagline: A tagline is a brief phrase that will help the corporation be well known in its industry for years to come. The main purpose of taglines is to help the organization market its products or services to a certain demographic. It also briefly states what the organization’s goals are for the product.
Slogan: Slogans are only used in certain advertising and marketing campaigns that an organization decides to take part in. The slogan changes all the time so that the slogan can be current and resonate well with consumers. Some slogans might make the consumer feel safe and include phrases such as we put our customers first or customer satisfaction guaranteed.
Mission Statement: A mission statement is a statement of the purpose of a company or organization. The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goal, provide a path, and guide decision-making. It provides "the framework or context within which the company's strategies are formulated
