It’s that time of year again…waiting to see if that little groundhog is going to see his shadow! In case you were not aware of the details of this special day here’s the gist of it. Every year on February 2nd , dating back to the 1800s, many gather in the traditional location of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the local celebrity, Phil, peak out of hibernation. The groundhog seeing its shadow means six more weeks of winter, and no shadow means spring is around the corner.
Interested in how a rodent managed to achieve the power of deciding our destiny year after year, find
out everything you’ve ever wanted to know here. I originally thought this tradition was an old wives’ tale, but it came to my surprise when I discovered that Groundhog Day proponents state that the rodents’ forecasts are actually 75% to 90% accurate. Who would have thought…that’s better that many trained weatherman forecasts these days!?! The predictions are even recorded in the Congressional Records of our National Archive.
So will it be sunshine in the near future or more cold weather ahead? Personally I would prefer to put the coat back in the closet to collect dust for the rest of the year. I’m actually working on a plot to put a tarp over the groundhog’s abode just to ensure that there’s no chance of a shadow!…Who’s with me?
