Feed Bag

Coach. Vera Bradley. Kate Spade. Who would have thought the next up and coming tote bag would be made popular by the United Nations?

The FEED bag, created by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), may not have been a predictable addition to any popular fashion mags “Must Have Accessories” list, but this organically made tote bag seems to be frequenting the shoulders of celebrities and average Joes alike. And contrary to what I initially thought—the proceeds do not go to starving farm animals.

So here is the story behind the FEED bag:

The World Food Program is an United Nations organization committed to combating hunger among the 854 million undernourished people worldwide. Per the WFP web site, the program offers food relief in response to man-made and natural disasters, as well as food aid to encourage social and economic progress in underdeveloped nations.

Headed up by Lauren Bush, honorary WFP spokesperson, Whole Foods Market recently partnered with FEED projects to develop the FEED 100 bag. For $29.99, this bag will provide 100 meals to hungry school children in Rwanda. I was surprised to read that Whole Foods Market will not receive any profits from the sale of the FEED 100 bag, all funds go to the FEED foundation cause.

I think it is safe to say that this is one fashion trend that will not end up on “What not to Wear.”

To get your own FEED 1 bag, visit www.amazon.com. The FEED 100 bag is available at Whole Foods Market stores.

You can even fight world hunger from your cubicle. Go to www.freerice.com to play a word game that will donate 20 grains of rice through the WFP for every right answer you get.
